Proposed Changes to Tachograph Legislation

Proposed Changes to Tachograph Legislation

Proposed changes to tachograph legislation could mean that technological advancements like satellite location could be used, according to the European Commission.

The aim behind this proposal is to reduce the incidents of fraud, administration (tachograph related etc.) and save haulage companies around 515 million Euros each year.

Safety for drivers (and other road users) will be another benefit as it will be much harder for hauliers to expect their drivers to break the law and not get caught. Drivers should also be able to get the correct rest periods they are expected to take.  An increase in competition is therefore expected, claim the commission.

The Freight Transport Association have welcomed the proposals and believe that making the tachograph easier to use will increase driver compliance, saftey and hauliers who bend/break the rules.

This should also please the vast majority of hauliers who do abide by the rules and are frustrated at those who do not.  The only question that remains is how have the Commission arrived at the figure of an annual saving of 500 million Euros?
